Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. The holiday originated as a harvest festival, it is in memory of the pilgrims’ first successful corn harvest with the help from the Native Americans. This tradition has been observed since 1621 and is a day for people to give thanks for the blessings they have received throughout the year. Thanksgiving Day is also celebrated in Canada, Liberia, and some of the Caribbean islands.
Thanksgiving Day is widely known for its turkey and pumpkin pie feasts, but there is much more to this holiday than just delicious food. Here are some more interesting facts and traditions that you may not have known about Thanksgiving Day:
1. The First Thanksgiving
The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in 1621 by the pilgrims at Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. They celebrated their first successful harvest and shared a meal with the Native Americans who showed them how to cultivate the land.
2. The Turkey
It is said that the pilgrims didn’t have turkey on their first Thanksgiving menu, but they did enjoy other types of poultry, as well as deer meat and seafood. Turkey as the centerpiece of the meal didn’t become popular until the 1800s.
3. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual tradition that started in 1924 in New York City. The parade features giant helium-filled balloons, floats, marching bands, and performances in front of millions of spectators and viewers through television broadcasts.
4. The Presidential Pardon
Every year, the sitting U.S. President pardons a turkey, saving it from becoming Thanksgiving dinner. This tradition started in 1947 by President Harry Truman, although there is no official record of a president before him taking on this task.
5. The Wishbone
The wishbone of the turkey has been used in a game of luck for centuries. Two people grab either side of the wishbone and make a wish before pulling it apart until it breaks. It is believed that the person who gets the bigger piece of the bone will have their wish come true.
Thanksgiving Day is more than just a holiday to share a delicious meal with family and friends, it is a day to reflect on all the things we are thankful for. Take some time on this day to express gratitude and appreciation for the blessings in your life. Happy Thanksgiving Day!
